Playing tennis in Edmonton I've met a lot of great people. The community is constantly growing and changing. However this hasn't always been the case. Throughout my tennis journey I’ve been faced with a lot of stereotypical ways of thinking.  

For example, I've heard the following: 

“You're pretty good for a girl.”  

“Men and women can't play against each other.” 

“You play like a girl.” (said to other men as a way to put them down.)

“Men are stronger.” 

“I wish I got to play against the women's draw that would be easier.” (in a tournament) 

We want to challenge these dated and hurtful ways of thinking as well as empower and celebrate women's tennis. We believe that these kinds of phrases can make women feel uncomfortable, frustrated, and defeated, thereby limiting their desire to participate in the beautiful, fun, and healthy sport of tennis. 

Currently across Edmonton tennis tournaments, women's draws are half or even a third of the size of the men's draws. We hope to see those numbers increase as well as create an inclusive tennis community where women can learn and play together. We believe that every player—regardless of her skill level—deserves to be seen as an equal, treated with respect, and given a space to thrive.
